Divisional Plan

Professional Learning Funding provided by Manitoba Education - Please provide details below

1) To date, how have you used the money your division received for K-8 teachers' LwICT professional learning in 2008-09 and 2009-10?
  • TRSD has used our money to pay part of the ICT consultant's salary.
  • hosted 1 division-wide and 2 smaller group training sessions for teachers,
  • helped cover costs for travel, supplies and certificates for after-school technology sessions.

2) What professional learning is occurring now because of the extra funding that you previously not able to do?
  • Classroom projects in infusing ICT,
  • after-school technology training sessions for staff.

3) Does your division have any strategies for ongoing professional learning (For example: Professional Learning Community - online, face-to-face, mentors, etc?)

  • ICT consultant is providing in-class pedagogical and technical support for teachers and students involved in a mosaic of curricular activities.
  • School principals encourage individual teachers to participate in the after-school tech sessions offered by the ICT consultant and TRSD teachers with expertise in particular realms of LwICT

4) What successful strategies would you like to recommend to other divisions?
The after-school sessions have been very successful. These 1-2 hours sessions provide experience in using general and specific software applications for classroom purposes.
Involving school principals in identifying those teachers who would most benefit from collaborating with the ICT consultant on classroom projects has resulted in a strong push to strengthen the LwICT initiative in all of our schools.

Report Card Samples

5) How often do you report on Literacy with ICT during the school year?
three or four times a year, depending upon the grade level.

6) Which grades are reporting on Literacy with ICT?
K - 8

7) When does the reporting occur?
K - 6 report in November, March and June.
7 - 8 report in November, February, April and June.

8) What feedback have you received from parents regarding reporting of Literacy with ICT?
We have generally not received a lot of feedback, but what has been received has been overwhelmingly positive.
Some parents have expressed gratitude that such valuable skills are being taught and assessed in this manner.
Some parents have asked for detailed explanations about the underlying philsophies for the LwICT initiative, and subsequently, have been pleased to see how the technologies support subject areas and are not simply a subject unto themselves.

9) In certain circumstances, a child may have more than one teacher. How would/do your teachers report on a child's literacy with ICT in this circumstance? Please discuss with your divisional team and record some possible strategies to address this issue.
In some schools, teachers meet together to assess each students LwICT.
In other schools, each teacher contributes anecdotal comments regarding each student, and the homeroom teacher collates this data and completes the written report for each student.

10) If there have been changes to your divisional statement of belief on reporting on LwICT, since last year, upload or insert the text below.
There have been no changes during the last school year.

Transition to Senior Years

11) Thoughts on Literacy with ICT transition to the Senior Years
TRSD is waiting for provincial leadership in terms of formal expectations of reporting on ICT for senior years. Across most of our schools, high school teachers also teach in the middle years and are familiar with the LwICT continuum. The pedagogical approach fostered by the LwICT continuum is put into practice by these teachers to improve student engagement. Therefore, movement to bringing LwICT to the senior years is underway, in an informal way. The ICT consultant, currently, supports some of our high school teachers in the same manner that K - 8 teachers are supported as they infuse technology into their curricula.

12 )Ongoing support for K-8 teachers
The ICT consultant will continue to provide support in the same fashion, including working with teachers and students during the day, and teachers in the after-school training sessions.
